INSIGNE COLLEGIATE CHURCH OF GANDIA
HISTORY IN FIRST PERSON
The Insigne Collegiate Church of Gandia, also known as La Seu de Gandia, is a majestic Gothic temple located in the heart of Gandia’s historic center.
Built between the 14th and 16th centuries, it stands out for its sober architecture with a single nave, exterior buttresses and beautiful side chapels.
It was promoted by the Dukes of Gandia, including members of the Borgia family. In 1499, Pope Alexander VI, at the request of Duchess María Enríquez de Luna, elevated its rank to collegiate church.
Today, it is an important cultural and religious symbol of the city, governed by a Collegiate Chapter led by an Abbot. By papal mandate, this Abbot has the privilege of wearing episcopal vestments.
